John Borthwick Barbour was a doctor of medicine, gaining his MD in 1865 . Upon his death on the 12th February 1877 , he bequeathed the residue of his personal estate (subject to the life-rent of his widow) to the University of Glasgow for the foundation of a scholarship for the promotion of original research in Anatomy or Physiology.
